Comienza en otoño la visita apostólica en Irlanda

CIUDAD DEL VATICANO, 31 MAY 2010 (VIS).-La Oficina de Prensa de la Santa Sede ha dado a conocer esta mañana el siguiente comunicado concerniente a la visita apostólica en Irlanda anunciada en la “Carta pastoral del Santo Padre Benedicto XVI a los católicos de Irlanda (19 de marzo de 2010)”:

“Siguiendo la Carta a los católicos de Irlanda, en otoño comenzará la Visita Apostólica a algunas diócesis, seminarios y congregaciones religiosas del país.

Mediante esa visita la Santa Sede quiere ayudar a los obispos, clérigos, religiosos y laicos a responder adecuadamente a la situación causada por los trágicos casos de abusos de menores perpetrados por sacerdotes y religiosos y contribuir a la deseada renovación moral y espiritual que ya ha iniciado con fuerza la Iglesia de Irlanda.

Los visitadores apostólicos se proponen profundizar en la problemática ligada al tratamiento de los casos de abusos y la debida asistencia a las víctimas y verificar la eficacia y la posibilidad de mejorar las modalidades actuales de prevención de los abusos, teniendo como referencia el “Motu proprio” pontificio “Sacramentorum sanctitatis tutela” y las normas del “Safeguarding Children: Standars and Guidance Document for the Catholic Church in Ireland”, (Salvaguardia de los niños: Documento normativo y orientaciones para la Iglesia Católica en Irlanda) encargado y elaborado por el “National Board for safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church”. (Consejo Nacional para la salvaguardia de los niños en la Iglesia Católica).

La visita iniciará en las cuatro archidiócesis metropolitanas de Irlanda (Armagh, Dublín, Cashel and Emly y Tuam), y se extenderá posteriormente a algunas otras diócesis.

Los visitadores nombrados por el Santo Padre para las diócesis son: el cardenal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, arzobispo emérito de Westminster, para la archidiócesis de Armagh; el cardenal Sean Patrick O’Malley, O.F.M. Cap., arzobispo de Boston, para la archidiócesis de Dublín; el arzobispo Thomas Christopher Collins, de Toronto, para la archidiócesis de Cashel and Emly; el arzobispo Terrence Prendergast, S.I., de Ottawa, para la archidiócesis de Tuam.

En su deseo de acompañar el camino de renovación de los lugares de formación de los futuros sacerdotes de la Iglesia en Irlanda, la Congregación para la Educación Católica coordinará la visita de los seminarios en Irlanda y del Colegio Pontificio Irlandés de Roma. Aunque se prestará una atención especial a las cuestiones que han exigido la visita apostólica, en el caso de los seminarios se tendrán en cuenta todos los elementos concernientes a la formación sacerdotal. Se ha nombrado visitador apostólico al arzobispo Timothy Dolan, de Nueva York.

La Congregación para los Institutos de Vida Consagrada y las Sociedades de Vida Apostólica, por su parte, organizará la visita a las casas religiosas en dos fases. En primer lugar llevará a cabo una investigación por medio de un cuestionario enviado a todos los superiores de los institutos religiosos en Irlanda, a fin de lograr un conocimiento adecuado de la situación actual y de los proyectos sobre el cumplimiento y la mejora de las normas de las “directrices”. Para la segunda fase, los visitadores serán los padres Joseph Tobin, C.Ss.R. y Gero McLaughlin, S.I., para los institutos masculinos; las religiosas Sharon Holland, I.H.M. y Mairin McDonagh, R.J.M., para los institutos femeninos. Realizarán un estudio detallado de evaluación de los resultados recogidos y de las posibles medidas futuras para promover una estación de renacimiento espiritual de la vida religiosa en la isla.

El Santo Padre invita a todos los miembros de la comunidad católica de Irlanda a sostener con la oración esta obra de ayuda fraterna. Invoca la bendición del Señor para sus visitadores y todos los obispos, sacerdotes, religiosos y fieles laicos de Irlanda, para que la visita sea una ocasión de renovado fervor en la vida cristiana, que profundice su fe y refuerce su esperanza en Cristo nuestro Salvador”.

Apostolic Visitation of Ireland to begin this autumn

VATICAN CITY, 31 MAY 2010 (VIS) – This morning the Holy See Press Office released the following English-language communique concerning the apostolic visitation of Ireland as announced in the Holy Father’s 19 March Letter to the Catholics of Ireland:

“Following the Holy Father’s Letter to the Catholics of Ireland, the apostolic visitation of certain Irish dioceses, seminaries and religious congregations will begin in autumn of this year.

“Through this visitation, the Holy See intends to offer assistance to the bishops, clergy, religious and lay faithful as they seek to respond adequately to the situation caused by the tragic cases of abuse perpetrated by priests and religious upon minors. It is also intended to contribute to the desired spiritual and moral renewal that is already being vigorously pursued by the Church in Ireland.

“The apostolic visitors will set out to explore more deeply questions concerning the handling of cases of abuse and the assistance owed to the victims; they will monitor the effectiveness of and seek possible improvements to the current procedures for preventing abuse, taking as their points of reference the Pontifical ‘Motu Proprio’ ‘Sacramentorum Sanctitatis Tutela’ and the norms contained in ‘Safeguarding Children: Standards and Guidance Document for the Catholic Church in Ireland’, commissioned and produced by the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church.

“The visitation will begin in the four metropolitan archdioceses of Ireland (Armagh, Dublin, Cashel and Emly, and Tuam) and will then be extended to some other dioceses.

“The visitors named by the Holy Father for the dioceses are: Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, archbishop emeritus of Westminster, England, for the archdiocese of Armagh; Cardinal Sean Patrick O’Malley O.F.M. Cap., archbishop of Boston, U.S.A., for the archdiocese of Dublin; Archbishop Thomas Christopher Collins of Toronto, Canada, for the archdiocese of Cashel and Emly, and Archbishop Terrence Thomas Prendergast S.J. of Ottawa, Canada, for the archdiocese of Tuam.

“In its desire to accompany the process of renewal of houses of formation for the future priests of the Church in Ireland, the Congregation for Catholic Education will co-ordinate the visitation of the Irish seminaries, including the Pontifical Irish College in Rome. While special attention will be given to the matters that occasioned the apostolic visitation, in the case of the seminaries it will cover all aspects of priestly formation. Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York, U.S.A., has been named apostolic visitor.

“For its part, the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life will organise the visitation of religious houses in two phases. Firstly it will conduct an enquiry by means of a questionnaire to be sent to all the superiors of religious institutes present in Ireland, with a view to providing an accurate picture of the current situation and formulating plans for the observance and improvement of the norms contained in the ‘guidelines’. In the second phase, the apostolic visitors will be: Fr. Joseph Tobin C.Ss.R. and Fr. Gero McLaughlin S.J. for institutes of men; Sr. Sharon Holland I.H.M. and Sr. Mairin McDonagh R.J.M. for institutes of women. They will carry out a careful study, evaluating the results obtained from the questionnaire and the possible steps to be taken in the future in order to usher in a season of spiritual rebirth for religious life on the Island.

“His Holiness invites all the members of the Irish Catholic community to support this fraternal initiative with their prayers. He invokes God’s blessings upon the visitors, and upon all the bishops, clergy, religious and lay faithful of Ireland, that the visitation may be for them an occasion of renewed fervour in the Christian life, and that it may deepen their faith and strengthen their hope in Christ our Saviour”.
